Labour's hopes for the forthcoming election have been dealt a blow by expert analysts who have written off their chances in the marginal Cardiff North constituency.

The BBC's Welsh Affairs Editor, Vaughan Roderick, reported on the BBC website on 2nd April that: "Labour has become something of an endangered species in local elections" citing the major recent Liberal Democrat successes that have 'eaten into Labour territory'.

The article goes on to state: "Labour's decline in local government in Cardiff North has been so steep that if one were to judge solely on the basis of the 2004 council results this would appear to be a Conservative/Liberal Democrat marginal."

Commenting on the piece, Cardiff North's Assembly candidate, Ed Bridges, said: "Everyone that I have spoken to in Cardiff North recognises Labour's failures in Government in the last ten years - their broken promises on school building repairs, the crisis in the Ambulance Service, and the doubling of violent crime. The Liberal Democrats have clear, positive policies that will put these things right - it's no wonder people are turning from Labour to us. This article has just highlighted what we already know - Labour are haemorrhaging support in our part of Cardiff and the Welsh Lib Dems are likely to be the main beneficiaries."
