IRAQ: TIME FOR THE TRUTH12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Fri 6th Apr 2007
The Welsh Liberal Democrats have demanded a proper inquiry into the reasons Tony Blair's Labour Party took the UK to war in Iraq. With fresh atrocities taking place in the country on an almost daily basis, more and more people are questioning why Tony Blair's Labour government took us to war in the first place. Local Lib Dem campaigner, John Dixon, said: "The Liberal Democrats vigorously opposed the war in 2003. It was an illegal war, carried out in defiance of the United Nations. Now we are seeing the sad consequences of Mr Blair's unquestioning loyalty to George W. Bush and his refusal to listen to the views of the British people." At a national level, the Lib Dems have called for UK troops to leave Iraq. Cardiff North's Welsh Assembly candidate, Ed Bridges, told us: "Given the deepening sectarian conflict and the increasing hostility of the Iraqi people to the coalition forces, the time has come for a controlled exit. We have done all we can, but our presence is now exacerbating the situation. The process of withdrawal should begin now, with the aim of total withdrawal by the autumn. It is time to go." The human and financial cost of the war in Iraq has grown every day since Tony Blair took us to war four years ago. Blair was backed by both Labour and Conservative MPs. Rhiwbina Lib Dem activist, Fenella Bowden, said: "Bush and Blair's war is costing us £6.5 million every day. That money could be put to better use."
