The Gabalfa Focus Team have been asking questions about the informal BMX trail near to Blackweir.
There has been a history of BMX enthusiasts establishing informal trails throughout public open space across the city, including the woodland area at Blackweir. Natural resources are used to shape the landscape into BMX jumps - but this also disturbs the natural environment as well as the habitat of local wildlife. The Council has therefore had a policy of restoring the landscape whenever such informal trails have been built.
At last week's Full Council meeting, Cllr. Ed Bridges raised the issue, to find out what alternative provision has been made locally for BMX enthusiasts.
In the Council's official response, Cllr. Nigel Howells (Executive Member for Sport & Leisure) said: "There are official tracks available at Maindy and there are also 'dirt tracks' at SplottParkand the ABC Parkin Trowbridge. Dual use BMX / skate parks also exist throughout the city. The Council is looking at ways in which demand for this activity can be met and is currently in the early stages of exploring the possibility of providing formal BMX trails at specific sites. There are a number of factors that need to be carefully considered in the process of site assessment, which include proximity to residential areas; existing use of land; supervision and monitoring; and budgets. The Council will continue to work with stakeholder groups to address the situation."
Ed said: "It is difficult at Blackweir - obviously the Council don't want to discourage people from using our parks and doing exercise. But clearly the natural environment needs to be preserved, and the Council has spent a lot of money constructing the new facility at Maindy specifically for BMX enthusiasts to use."
