Residents and Heath councillor Fenella Bowden with one of the new bollards

July 15, 2010 12:45 PM

Residents near Heath Park are celebrating after the Council installed wooden bollards to stop cars parking on the grass verges. The entrance to the park had been blighted by workers and students from University Hospital Wales parking along the entrance way, to avoid paying for parking at the Barracks Square car park. Heath councillor, Fenella Bowden, said: "This is part of a programme to resolve the parking problems in Heath Park. We've finally got the poles and I went down this morning and found no cars parked there, so it's working. "I have been campaigning on this for a while and had come down to see people parking their cars and then walking through the hospital. Now hopefully all the plants will return to the grass verges and it'll be better for park users."

The cost of the work is £8,976. This involves installing the timber bollards and replacing damage or misplaced bollards. The Council will also be installing a vehicle maintenance access gate. University Hospital Wales responded to concerns about their staff parking in Heath Park by stressing their travel options for staff. Colin McMillan, Head of Contracting, Transport and Commercial Development, said: "Cardiff and Vale University Health Board (UHB) has a Sustainable Travel Plan, approved by Welsh Assembly Government, which is designed to encourage staff to ditch single occupancy cars and adopt more sustainable forms of travel. "The UHB has also introduced a car share scheme for all its employees, and improved changing and shower facilities for cyclists, as well as providing enhanced cycle storage shelters around the University Hospital Wales (UHW) site. "UHW is well served by public transport with many bus routes going through the hospital site, with access to two railway stations close by. We encourage staff to use public transport as part of an "active commute" to work and have produced active travel maps which indicate safe routes for walkers and cyclists to and from the site." A parking meter is being installed in the car park by the Model Railway. Residents will have a permit allowing them to park but anyone staying for an extended period will have to pay for parking.
