Cardiff North Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson John Dixon has welcomed today's compromise between the European Council and the European Parliament's Industry, Research and Energy Committee on the future energy efficiency labelling of consumer goods.
The agreement - part of the European Labelling Directive - would mean that all white goods must be sold with an updated energy label which will include a colour-coded A-G scale, alongside new A+, A++ and A+++ categories that show enhanced energy efficiency standards. European Lib Dem MEPs pushed hard to retain the A-G scale that European consumers know, trust and understand, while the Commission proposed a new and complex numbers scale.
One part of the compromise that the EU Parliament fought hard for is the possibility to update the scale when a significant number of products have reached the highest energy efficiency class.
John Dixon said:"I am very happy about today's outcome and confident that the directive will drive up energy efficiency standards in the industry, despite fierce lobbying from the white goods industry. An eco-efficient economy will only be possible where consumers have the power to make informed choices."
