Liberal Democrat leader, Nick Clegg MP (centre), has set out plans to make Britain fairer; Cardiff North Lib Dem Parliamentary spokesman, John Dixon (left) and Gabalfa councillor, Ed Bridges (right) have welcomed the proposals.
The Liberal Democrats are now the only party that can deliver social justice, and the only choice for anyone who wants a fairer Britain, Nick Clegg said today in his conference speech.
Nick Clegg said the Liberal Democrats were the party with the ideas that can get Britain out of the current financial downturn. Speaking to delegates at the Bournemouth conference, he set out the party's Fairer Future economic recovery plan.
Commenting on the proposals, which would see a reduction in tax for low- and middle-income earners, Nick Clegg said: "I want this to be the most progressive and most redistributive tax plan ever put forward by a British political party. We want to use just a little of the money the government wastes every day to help people in their everyday lives. That doesn't mean cutting help for the poorest, of course. It doesn't mean stopping vital investment in hospitals and schools. It just means taking a cold, hard look at all government spending and asking a basic question: is it working?"
Nick also encouraged those people who had been drawn to Labour in the 1990s, because they believed in a better future, to turn to the Liberal Democrats as the only people who could now make it happen.
"Labour is finished. It's over. The Liberal Democrats are now the only party that can deliver social justice. The only choice for anyone who wants a fairer Britain. We are a party that will put money back in the pockets of ordinary families. A party that will build a stable, green economy for each and every one of us. A party that will change politics so that every person counts."
Liberal Democrat leader, Nick Clegg, is calling for tax cuts for low earners to ease current financial pressures.
Local Lib Dems from Cardiff were quick to welcome Nick's speech. Liberal Democrat Parliamentary spokesman for Cardiff North, John Dixon, said: "This week has shown that the Lib Dems are united behind a desire to put right Labour's mistakes and improve Britain. We want to put power back into the hands of ordinary people by cutting government waste and putting families back in control of their money. Labour CAN'T make the economy fairer for those in need, and the Conservatives WON'T. The Lib Dems CAN, and we will make it happen."
Gabalfa councillor, Ed Bridges, added: "Under Labour, public spending has risen from roughly £300 billion per year in 1997 to £600 billion now. If we, as citizens, are having to tighten our belt because of the credit crunch, it is only right that government should do the same. The Liberal Democrats, under Nick Clegg, will cut government waste and put that money back into the pockets of low- and middle-income earners."
