Action on Noise Nuisance

September 2, 2008 12:00 AM

Cardiff's Liberal Democrat council is taking action on noise nuisance in the city.

The council has launched a new out-of-hours noise nuisance response team to tackle problems from loud parties and late-night disturbance. Two out-of-hours Noise Enforcement Officers will be on duty from 7pm onwards from Wednesday to Sunday, with the service operating as late as 3am at peak periods on the weekends.

The Officers are available to respond to incidents such as noisy parties, and have wide ranging powers to issue Fixed Penalty Notices where necessary. In extreme cases, they can also seize noise equipment.

Residents can report noise nuisance problems via the 101 non-emergency number, and relevant issues will be passed to the out-of-hours noise nuisance team for their attention.

Councillor Ed Bridges, Chair of the Public Protection Committee, said: "Noise seriously affects the quality of life of residents of Cardiff, and persistent noise offenders will not be tolerated. The Council takes action wherever unreasonable disturbance is being caused and Officers may confiscate equipment or instigate legal proceedings where necessary. The formation of the out of hours team demonstrates our commitment to tackle noise pollution."

John Dixon, Lib Dem Parliamentary spokesman for Cardiff North, added: "Cardiff is the first Council in Wales to introduce this service, and that's a fantastic achievement. The Lib Dems promised in our manifesto for the local elections last May that we would introduce this service, and we're very proud to be at this stage now. It underlines that only the Lib Dems can be trusted to tackle anti-social behaviour of this type."
