Local Lib Dems, John Dixon (left) and Ed Bridges (right) have welcomed the appointment of Nick Clegg MP as the new Leader of the Liberal Democrats.

Welsh Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson for Cardiff North, John Dixon has congratulated Nick Clegg on his election as Leader of the Liberal Democrats.

John Dixon said: "I think the result reflects the difficulty of the choice that we felt within the party, with two such excellent candidates. To be perfectly honest, even though I personally voted for Nick, I would have been more than happy with Chris Huhne as leader.

"I met both recently, and had the opportunity to talk to them about where they see the party going. I am certain that Nick's vision of a liberal future for Britain will translate into a confident agenda for the party and the country, and I'm sure that Chris will continue to play a critical role within the party.

"With catastrophe after catastrophe for the Labour Party and the Tories irrelevant in so many parts of Britain, I know that Nick will lead us to great success at the next General Election and beyond."

Lib Dem Welsh Assembly spokesman for Cardiff North, Cllr. Ed Bridges, added: "Nick will be an excellent leader for our party, and I firmly believe that the future is extremely bright for us now. I look forward to a long and prosperous period for the party under Nick's stewardship."
