Lib Dems in Cardiff have been campaigning against Labour's top-up fees.
The Liberal Democrats have hit out at Gordon Brown's Labour party after new official figures showed that student debt in the UK now stands at a huge £18 billion.
Local Lib Dem Westminster spokesman, John Dixon, said: "Graduates are being burdened by a staggering amount of debt as they start out in life. Labour may talk about encouraging more people to go to university, but these figures highlight the fact that Labour are actually making it harder for less well-off students to get an education."
Local student and Lib Dem councillor, Ed Bridges, added: "The Lib Dems want to see university education made fairer for everybody. That means scrapping all fees and bringing back maintenance grants so that education can again be a right and not a privilege. We'd pay for it by saving money on pointless schemes like ID cards."
